How exactly are labour charges calculated?

I am actually looking to get some interior work done at my place. I’ve heard that labour charges usually make up for a sizable portion of the costs. Just looking for someone to explain the breakup and how exactly it is calculated.

If you are looking at smaller units and single pieces of furniture, and movable items, the labour costs are calculated lump sum.

On the other hand, for larger furniture components, like the bed, wardrobes, bookshelf, etc., the costs are calculated per sq. ft.

So, if you are looking for the labour charges for a customised bed, the cost would be calculated like this:

Length of the component x Height of the component = Total Sq. Ft.

Total Sq. Ft. x Per Sq. Ft. Cost = Total Labour Cost.

Here’s what a typical breakdown of the costs looks like:

Your interior designer should ideally provide a BOQ (Bill Of Quantities) that lists all the components along with the estimated labour costs, calculated either lump sum or per sq. ft.

Thank you for the detailed response!
