We are planning to get the bathroom done up in our new apartment. What are the common mistakes I should avoid?

I wanted some guidance for designing a bathroom.

For a bathroom that’s functionally sound, and also looks good, you need to focus on the layout! It should be at the crux of your design plans…

Next, pay attention to lighting! Only overhead lighting will not be sufficient - it is important to have layered lighting or task lighting for a truly functional bathroom. I also suggest installing some form of lighting above the mirror with a wall sconce (especially you have someone in the family who takes a good deal of time to dress up!)

Dark corners can be enhanced using recess lighting. Choose mood lighting fittings with LED technology like recessed LED downlights, mirror integrated LED lighting.

The most common mistake that people make is ignoring the storage space. It is very important to design your bathroom in a way that there is proper storage. Things like butterfly hooks, corner racks etc can be used. Use products that are robust and water resistant to sustain the various conditions in a bathroom like cold, steam, and heat.

With the dream of getting a lavish bathroom, people tend to forget the functionality aspect which is a huge mistake as any bathroom should have all of the essentials. There should be an arm’s length space in the positioning of toilet fittings, washbowl, and shower area.

Another thing which is ignored is the water conservation. Water should be saved during flushing and showering. Therefore, it is better to go for auto shutoff faucets and showers and going for grey water system for places that do not require resh water.

Mistakes can also be made during the selection of a bathtub. The dimensions, and the drain hole alignment has to be checked.

Toilet should not be the first thing when you enter your bathroom. A small half partition between the toilet and the remaining areas should be there if the toilet has to be the first thing.

Bathroom door should be installed in a way it does not hit any object while swinging open.Pocket door or sliding doors are good options.

A proper ventilation system should be there in the bathroom, like an exhaust fan.

The water pressure should be checked before installing any showers and taps.A plumber will be the right person to consult.

If you want to have wallpapers in your bathroom, make sure you buy ones that can withstand humidity and heat.

If you get some painting done in your bathroom, make sure it is mold resistant.

Another aspect to make mistakes is the tile.Always go for anti-skid tiles with minimalistic design so that the cleaning process is easy.Choose the right colour, material, and size.

A bathroom should have a room freshener at all times to avoid the stale odour.

Make sure you consider these points before designing a bathroom.
