Round shaped ones can be used as a coffee table.The square shaped ottoman can be matched with the rest of your furniture or can be used on its own.Rectangular ottomans can also have storage space in them and can be used for sitting or relaxing in the living room or any other room.
The only thing is that the rectangular ones can be quiet heavy and might not be a good option for compact rooms.
There is no ideal size,it all depends on your preference and the space available.
